John Cartwright
1740 – 1824
Major John Cartwright (1740-1824) claimed authorship of the letters entitled “American Independence The Interest and Glory of Great Britain” in a letter to Edmund Burke and distributed them before the doors of Parliament in April of 1774. He had been commander of the HM Cutter Sherborne, pursuing smugglers off the coast of Devon, but during the conflict with the colonies, refused a commission by the Duke of Cumberland on the grounds that the Americans were claiming their just natural rights.
