Titles by Jonathan Shipley
1714 – 1788
Dr. Jonathan Shipley (1714 – 1788), the bishop of St. Asaph, was the only bishop of the English Church to speak out against Parliament’s response to the Boston Tea Party. The attribution of this text was first made by the printer in 1774 and was never denied by Shipley or his heirs. Shipley was known to be warmly attached to the American cause and was strongly associated with Old Whig ideas. He was said to be a friend to both Benjamin Franklin and a young Alexander Hamilton.
