Publications include Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and the Rise of French Republican Socialism (Oxford UP, 1984); Between Marxism and Anarchism: Benoît Malon and French Reformist Socialism (Univ. of CA Press, 1992); and Benjamin Constant the Birth of French Liberalism (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2011). His latest book, Élie Halévy: Republican Liberalism Confronts the Era of Tyrannies is forthcoming from University of Pennsylvania Press.
