Ruth Scurr is Fellow and Director of Studies in Human, Social and Political Sciences at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a member of the Advisory Committee for the Oxford Centre for Life-Writing.

Her doctoral thesis was on Pierre-Louis Rœderer’s social and political thought during the French Revolution. Since then she has published a biography of Maximilien Robespierre, Fatal Purity (2006), and an innovative biography of the father of English biography, John Aubrey: My Own Life (2015). She is recently finishing a book about Napoleon titled Napoleon: A Life in Gardens and Shadows (2021).
