Anthony Howe, MA, D.Phil (Oxon), FRHistS, was educated at the University of Oxford (Wadham and Nuffield Colleges) and was a lecturer at Oriel College, Oxford, before moving to the department of international history at the London School of Economics (1983-2003).

Since 2003 he has been professor of modern history at the University of East Anglia. His publications include Free Trade and Liberal England, 1846-1946 (Oxford, 1998) and Rethinking Nineteenth-Century Liberalism: Richard Cobden Bicentenary Essays (with Simon Morgan) (2006). Since 2003 he has been the main editor of The Letters of Richard Cobden (1804-65), the fourth and final volume of which was published in August 2015, marking the 150th anniversary of Cobden’s death.
