He is the author of several books, including Frederick Douglass: Self-Made Man, The Conscience of the Constitution, The Permission Society, and Freedom’s Furies: How Isabel Paterson, Rose Wilder Lane, and Ayn Rand Found Liberty in an Age of Darkness, and has published numerous scholarly articles on legal, historical, and literary subjects. As an attorney, he litigates in defense of individual rights in state and federal courts nationwide. He has also taught classes at Pepperdine University, George Mason University Law School, McGeorge School of Law, and Arizona State University, where he held the 2023-24 Barry Goldwater Chair in American Institutions. He is a graduate of Chapman University School of Law and Hillsdale College.
